FAQs

We understand that booking a retreat is more than a transaction. It is a commitment of your time, your energy, and your trust in us to create something genuinely worthwhile.

These are the questions people have before they book — usually the ones they don’t quite say out loud. Some of this info is also on our insta page if that’s easier for you to access.

What actually is a Maker Getaway retreat?

It’s a few days where you get proper, uninterrupted time to make things with a bunch of people who share a passion for craft.

There are classes, there’s structure, but the real point is that you have the time and space to sit down and just get on with making (and the odd bit of learning) without feeling like you should be doing something else. We want you to get out of it what you'd like to.

Can I come on my own?

Yes — and most people do.

People worry they’ll be the only one. They’re not. Typically around 70–80% of people book solo. We are open to everyone.

Of course some arrive slightly unsure. But we’re all crafters right? It doesn’t take long to strike up a conversation about what you’re working on. And early in the schedule, we have a brilliant icebreaker - you’ll be trying out all sorts of different brands of needles and hooks (if you want to explore) - and NOTHING gets crafters talking like critiquing tools.

Who is welcome?
EVERYONE! Our retreats are fully inclusive and everyone is welcome.

Do I have to be a knitter?

No.

We have crochet classes as well, and Louise (our crochet teacher) is there throughout — whether you want help, advice, or just a chat.

Also, you don’t have to be in any class at all.

If there’s a knitting or crochet class on and you don’t fancy it, there’s always another space you can go to. You can move between things, sit somewhere quieter, or just work on your own project.

Do I have to be experienced?

No.

Some people come to learn something new. Some come to improve. Some just want the time to sit and make something without interruption. You do you, and you’ll get what you want out of the experience.

What do I get for my money?
A great hotel, great food and company and craft time.
Knitting tuition is by Adam @CleevelyKnits, and crochet tuition by Louise @TheMakerOnTheMove.
Cambridge is full board, but Edinburgh has a deliberate afternoon and evening free to allow you time within the schedule to go into the city to visit the Christmas market, or do a bit of sightseeing.

You’ll also get an extremely generous goodie bag with all of the supplies you'll need for the retreat. Equipment, lot of yarn (and you’ll get to choose your colours) and a few extra surprises.

Do I have to pay upfront?

There are two payment options.

You can pay in full at the time of booking, or pay a 50% deposit at the time of booking with the remaining 50% due no later than 28 days before the first day of the retreat. All deposits are non-refundable. Your booking is confirmed once you complete the checkout process and a confirmation email is issued to you.

What if I can no longer it?

If you are no longer able to attend, please let us know as soon as possible at hello@makergetaway.com. If you cancel more than 28 days before the retreat, we will endeavour to resell your place. If your place is successfully resold, a refund will be issued minus a 10% administration fee. If you cancel less than 28 days before the retreat, payments are non-refundable. If we are unable to resell your place, we are unfortunately unable to offer a refund. With our agreement, bookings may be transferred to another guest.

Travel insurance can be purchased to include your retreat.

What about accessibility and dietary requirements?

If you have specific requirements, just let us know when booking (there’s a place to tell us on the booking form).

We have chosen venues based on extremely high standards for accessibility and ability to handle dietary requirements.

What does it actually feel like?

This is the bit people try to work out before they book and it’s hard for us to describe.

We care about warmth, support, fun, inclusivity, and learning. Our environments reflect this.

It’s just a room full of people making things, learning something, and having a chat (or not). Like a craft evening - but one that goes on for a few days.

Is it really busy?

No.

There are things happening across the day, but you’re not expected to do all of them.

You can go to a class, skip the next thing, take a break, go for a walk, or just stay put and keep making.

Will we get time to explore?

Yes - sort of.

In Edinburgh, there’s time built in to go out — whether that’s a walk, the Christmas market or enjoy the city.

Cambridge is slightly different because we’re just outside the city. It has more of a “bubble” feeling. Though it’s still pretty easy to go for a walk.

There’s still plenty on-site — spa, swimming pool, gym — so you’ve got options during your breaks in crafting.

What are the evenings like?

Low key.

There’s no expectation that you have to be social if you’re tired. But we all have dinner together on most nights (check specific schedules). Some of us head to the bar too.

Do I need to bring anything specific?
No.
We provide everything you need for the classes and for you to get started on the project we have in mind.
You’re very welcome to bring anything else you’re working on as well, whether that’s something you want to show off or just something you’d like some uninterrupted time to make progress on.

Who is this actually for?

If you’ve been thinking “I just want some time to sit and make things properly,” it’s probably for you.

If you like the idea of being around people who get it, without it feeling forced or awkward, it’s probably for you.

We hope we've put your mind at ease.
If you have any more questions, please head to the Contact page and we'd be more than happy to help.
